Finally "Dr." … also in the English speaking world !

For some reason instead in Italy, a master or bachelor degree already give you the title "doctor", a PhD is not needed for that. Similarly in Italy also "Prof." is said of high school teachers, not just university professors.

Even if the title doesn't make much difference, I believe there is a huge difference between PhD and other degrees especially in the cultural conception of knowledge behind them…In my over 5 years of research experience (1 year also during master actually), I noticed a radical difference between studying things others had already discovered and doing research to try to discover myself new things ! Ph.D. means literally "Doctor of Philosophy", but for some periods of history that all-encompassing discipline forsook the pursuit of new knowledge and turned into a barren and slavish repetition of what real philosophers had invented in the far past.

Thus to say that the Earth revolves around the Sun and not viceversa Galileo Galilei had to fight against both the "authority" of the Catholic Church interpreting some verses of the Bible and the "authority" of Aristotelian philosophy and its geocentric cosmology which dominated the universities of the time.

As the meaning and use of the academic titles somehow hint, scientific research is not guaranteed to be equally fostered in all times, nations and cultures. A PhD may help you also choose some of the latter.
